Become a PAVA Member

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Individual persons with particular competence in the fields of voice science, vocal music, vocal coaching, speech pathology, otolaryngology or allied fields in voice (as determined by the Board of Directors or its designee (s)) are eligible for consideration and acceptance as members. All members are eligible to vote in PAVA elections

PAVA application procedures vary with the level of membership. All members are entitled to vote. For all levels of membership, see the required supplementary materials below. You must have all supplementary materials ready to upload at the time of application. Your application cannot be processed without the required supplemental materials.

FULL MEMBER ($126 per year, renewed at the date of approval):

Full Members shall consist of individuals with established pedagogical, clinical, or research competence as it relates to the goals of the Association, and who have demonstrated these qualities by their actions and publications as a practitioner or a researcher. The Board of Directors (or its designee (s)) shall be furnished with the candidate’s application, curriculum vitae, and evidence of pedagogical, clinical, or research competence. There shall be no specific requirements regarding medical board certification or academic degrees.

Only Full Members are eligible to apply for the PAVA Recognized Vocologist (PAVA-RV) designation.

To become a Full Member, a candidate must submit:

    • two recommendations from current PAVA Full Members

OR

    • one recommendation from a current PAVA Full Member and two recommendations from professional colleagues familiar with their work in vocology and collegiality.
      • If a candidate does not know any PAVA members, they should contact the Director of Membership. The Regional Governor of the candidate’s area will schedule a virtual meeting with the candidate and will provide a recommendation to the Director of Membership (in addition to two recommendation letters from professional colleagues). Each Full Member shall be entitled to one (1) vote on any matter to come before the Members of the Association and shall have the right to serve as a member of the Board of Directors and/or an officer, subject to the requirements set forth in these Bylaws.
    • If you do not know any PAVA members, please contact the Director of Membership. The regional governor of your area will contact you to schedule a phone or Zoom meeting and will provide a recommendation to the director of membership (in addition to two recommendation letters from professional colleagues).

FULL MEMBER APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Online Application
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Evidence of pedagogical, clinical, or research competence
    • Documentation of published articles or funded grants; certification of clinical competency [licensure in speech pathology, or board certification in otolaryngology]; certification of completion of a fellowship or specialized training in voice; diplomas from academic institutions; additional letters of support from peers in your field, etc.
    • Two completed recommendations from current Full PAVA Members (submitted via this Google Form). Submit a document with the names of your recommenders in the required field.

OR

    • One recommendation from a current Full PAVA Member (see directory of members), and two recommendations from professional colleagues familiar with your work and collegiality.
    • You must have all supplementary materials ready to upload at the time of application.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS ($63 per year, renewed at the date of approval):

Associate Membership is based on interest in the field of voice, either through an ongoing training program, an allied field, or desire to be an advocate. To this end, a formal application will be required. Applications will need approval by the Board of Directors (or its designee(s)) for status as an Associate Member. Each Associate Member shall be entitled to one (1) vote on any matter to come before the Members of the Association. Associate Members are not eligible to serve as a member of the Board of Directors and/or an officer, but may serve on advisory committees of the Association.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Online Application
    • A brief summary of credentials, including current position, past positions, academic study, and any specialty training in voice.
    • You must have all supplementary materials ready to upload at the time of application.

STUDENT MEMBERS* ($31 per year, renewed at the date of approval):

Any person who is engaged in formal university-level training or who is formally recognized by a professional organization as a trainee, and exhibits an interest in supporting the goals of the Association may be elected to student membership. To this end, a formal application will be required, which will include proof that the applicant is in training. Applications will need approval by the Board of Directors (or its designee(s)) for status as a student member. Each Student Member shall be entitled to one (1) vote on any matter to come before the Members of the Association. Student Members are not eligible to serve as a member of the Board of Directors and/or an officer but may serve on advisory committees of the Association. Student membership shall be limited to 5 years, subject to renewal for one additional 5-year term. Upon completion of training, or postgraduate education, or fellowship, a Student Member may request reclassification to associate or full membership by application to the Association as set forth above.

STUDENT MEMBER APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    • Online Application
    • Documentation of enrollment in educational program
    • Transcripts, letter from university registrar or current professor/trainer)
    • You must have all supplementary materials ready to upload at the time of application.

*Student membership is limited to a five year term with the possibility of one subsequent five year term. Student members can request reclassification to a higher level of membership upon the completion of training/education/fellowship and submitting any additional supplemental materials.
